Every year, around the world, March 8 is marked as International Women’s Day. It’s a time to recognise female trailblazers, to agitate for political change, to connect with women’s history and to take action for gender equality. It's an annual event rooted in history, first celebrated in the early 1900s after a woman called Clara Zetkin suggested the idea at a conference of working women.
In previous years, we've attended marches, signed petitions, joined conferences, listened to talks – we've celebrated over brunch with the women in our life. While circumstances are different this year, it is still a day to celebrate women around the world, their achievements, raise awareness about women's equality, and more.
In 2021, International Women’s Day is still desperately needed. But how can we celebrate when we’re all stuck at home? Well, the first thing you can do is post on social media. This year's International Women's Day campaign has chosen the theme #ChooseToChallenge, encouraging the idea that a challenged world is an alert one. The IWD campaign would like people to post an image of themselves on social media with their hand raised high to show they choose to challenge and call out inequality, using the hashtags #ChooseToChallenge #IWD2021.
But there are other ways you can get involved, too. From attending virtual events, dressing up as your favourite female icon for your weekly Zoom call or simply reminding the amazing women in your life just how great they are, there's a whole host of activities you can do today to celebrate International Women's Day.
One such way is with gin. Stillgarden Distillery in Dublin 8 has launched a brand new fruitful gin especially created for International Women's Day. Aptly named, Boss Lady Gin, the latest addition to their range of gin was inspired by Stillgarden's very own 'boss lady', Viki Baird who is known for her hustle, vitality and dynamic character and created to celebrate women everywhere. The gin is made using a mixture cold maceration and vacuum distillation to protect the fresh, juicy flavours of the botanicals and fruit within; Watermelon leads into powerful stonefruit dominated by peach & mango, followed by a juniper and coriander spice, rounded out with a fig kiss with a tropical & sweet citrus aroma. Priced at €35 for a 500ml bottle, Boss Lady Gin available to purchase now via their online shop.
Stillgarden Distillery has also created The Boss Lady Gift Box (€55) as the perfect option for us to celebrate with the women in our lives. Along with the new creation Boss Lady Gin, the gift box also contains two Stillgarden glasses with two premium mixers, a greeting card and two garden tour tickets to use at Stillgarden Distillery as soon as it's safe again to do so which includes a complimentary cocktail.
But to help support women everywhere even further, €2 from every bottle of Boss Lady Gin and €3 from every Boss Lady gift box will be donated to Women’s Aid, Ireland's leading national organisation that has been working in Ireland to stop domestic violence against women and children since 1974.
